The slender, colorful fungi are hard to miss. In Canada’s big cities, dispensaries with names like Fun Guyz and Shroom City display paintings of rainbow fungus on their exteriors, welcoming passersby and goading local police.

Until recently, picking, possessing and even selling these hallucinogenic mushrooms was illegal. But a high court decision has changed all that. Now, mushroom pickers, growers and sellers are flourishing across the country.

They are establishing pharma-grade shroom farms that produce the compound under strict conditions for research, therapeutic use and clinical trials. They’re also creating edibles like psilocybin chocolate bars, designed to be consumed at home for microdosing.

But despite the growing acceptance of magic mushrooms, they remain an illicit drug in the eyes of Health Canada and federal law enforcement. Psilocybin is listed as Schedule III under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, meaning it can be legally obtained only with a federal minister’s exemption or through a clinical trial.
